BIFFS
What is BIFFS?
BIFFS (Biotal Integrated Feed & Forage System) has been used over the last three years to improve the profitability of dairy and beef production in the UK, by optimizing the use of home grown and alternative forages.
How does it Work?
Unlike virtually all other feeding systems, BIFFS begins by establishing the short-long term objectives of the individual farm.
Working closely with the farmer, Biotal establishes the most effective combination of forages and feeds to achieve these objectives, whether they be milk yields, DLWG or improved Carcass Classification, while at the same time, reducing costs.
The specific combination of forages chosen will be influenced by what can be grown on the farm, storage facilities and the feeding system in place. Diets are costed so that the potential financial benefit is shown in terms of both cost savings and improved production.
An added bonus is that there are substantial, related benefits in terms of reduced energy input, reduced pollution and reduced nitrate usage which all help to reduce costs and maximise efficiency in the longer term.
What Does it Mean to Me?
Making a profit is dependent on achieving the optimum combination of animal performance, input feed cost and fixed cost structure.
Get it right and a reasonable return on investment can be achieved. Get it wrong and effectively you are working for the bank.
As approx 80% of the feed for an animal can be grown on farm, one of the biggest challenges is to identify the most appropriate forage and feeding system for your enterprise.
Biotal has been working with its customers, using BIFFS, for several years and has been extremely successful in achieving farm production objectives, while also reducing costs dramatically.
