Protein Crops

Growing legumes for the production of either fermented wholecrop forage or concentrate feed (such as crimp) is increasing thanks to the varieties of legume crops available and breakthroughs in inoculant technology.

This enables farmers to provide an increasing proportion of their protein requirements for dairy and beef production from forage which, in turn, provides an opportunity to reduce costs, improve profitability and develop a policy of traceability.

Legume crops can also be utilised as a source of home grown protein concentrate when crimped and preserved with Biotal Biocrimp.

Legumes are also grown as a bi-crop with selected cereals which provides a source of starch and protein. A popular mix is lupicaleage®, a mixture of Lupins and tritocale, which can be preserved with wholecrop legume.
