Yeast

The Biotal SC yeast range contains a unique live yeast selected for its specific and significant activities in the rumen.

It is E.U. approved for use in dairy and beef cattle diets, and so there is a large dossier of information which includes safety, stability, and efficacy.

The product works in three different ways.

Firstly, the yeast itself uses lactic acid as an energy source and so removes it from the rumen.

Secondly, it encourages the growth of the lactate utilising bacteria Selenomonas ruminatium and Megaspherea elsdenii. These bacteria remove lactic acid from the rumen, so keeping the pH higher and more favourable for other microbes to grow.

Thirdly, this leads to the growth of cellulolytic type bacteria and rumen fungi, which produce enzymes to digest the fibre in the forage. Since long fibre and forage make up the bulk of the ruminant diet, this has a major influence on increasing the digestibility of the diet.

One of the first observations after feeding the yeast in many cases, is the increase in appetite as a result of increased digestibility.
