Alkosel R397

alkosel® R397 is a specific inactivated whole cell yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) product containing the essential trace element selenium in its natural food form, L(+) selenomethionine.

It is produced by growing yeast in the presence of measured amounts of selenium. This specific yeast strain absorbs selenium and biochemically transforms it into the highly bioavailable L(+) selenomethionine and other seleno-proteins.

Selenomethionine is naturally found in edible plant protein but only at very low concentration.

It is the most suitable form of selenium for animal nutrition.

In aquaculture, Selenium deficiencies have been related to some pathologies (Pancreatic disease in farmed Atlantic Salmon for instance) and end-product quality issues (meat peroxydization).

The main dietary Selenium source for aquatic species comes from fishmeal, a form of Selenium that has poor bioavailability. In fact, Selinium incorporated into proteins as selenomethionin represents the highest bioavailable form of selenium, when compared to fishmeal, but also to sodium selenite, the mineral form of Selenium.

alkosel® R397 is an inactivated whole cell yeast product that contains elevated levels of selenomethioine.

In salmon species, trails have shown the benefits of alkosel® R397 vs. non organic Selenium on performance, survival (decreased mortality and increased resistance to pathogens), and immunity. This study also showed that the increased efficacy of alkosel® R397 vs. mineral Selenium is linked to its higher bioavailability for the organism.

Registration

Europe: alkosel® R397 is registered (EC N°3b8.11) as a nutritional feed additive for all animal species. This registration is specific to the Lallemand yeast strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCYC R397 used in the manufacture of alkosel® R397.
